My favorite city in the world! Legend says that Rome was founded on April 21, 753 B.C. by two brothers, Romulus and Remus. The brothers were prone to violent outbursts (they were the twin sons of the war god, Mars, after all) and Romulus soon murdered his brother. Thus, Romulus became the first king of the city. Although little evidence remains of the Monarchy period of Roman history, archaeological remains of the Republic and Empire abound. A tourist with limited time might confine themselves to the most famous sites, such as the Forum and the Pantheon, but the choices for equally fascinating sites are seemingly endless. I recommend returning often to explore such sites as the Mammertine Prison (where Peter and Paul are reputed to have been imprisoned), Trajan’s Market (not just the beautiful view from the Via de Fori Imperiali, but the indoor “mall” and museum) and the Viscus Caprarius la Citta dell’Acqua (a remnant of an iconic acquaduct built by Marcus Agrippa). For those willing to venture further afield, Ostia Antica, Portus, and Pompeii are a short train-ride away. Pompeii requires a bit more time, but Ostia Antica is easily reached from Rome for those with limited time (approximately an hour from Termini Station) and offers a fascinating glimpse into the Roman past, including an impressive theater built by Marcus Agrippa (he’s everywhere it seems). In short, Rome – I just don’t have enough time or space here to expound on the city – is a gem. Iconic favorites abound and a shabby door can lead to unexpected treasures. In Agrippa’s Map<\/em>\u00a9, Jake has a “Eureka” moment as he gazes upon Trajan’s Column. Readers will note that the image above shows the Roman Army, complete with their standards. Hint-there’s a clue there! The column is just one element of the vast complex that is Trajan’s Forum, as well as the adjoining market. Built between 106-113 A.D. by the Emperor Trajan, it is remarkably well-preserved. Visitors can stroll through much of the Forum and Market today, although admission is charged for access into the market complex itself. It is well worth the expenditure of time and money. You might even find a friend in one of the stray cats that call Trajan’s Market home – as I did! I named her Bagheera. And of course, there’s the food…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
