A vibrant city with an ambitious calendar of festivities, Merida is a history lover&#8217;s dream. As the capital ofJ the Ancient Roman province of Lusitania, the city of Emerita Augusta (modern Merida) flourished under the patronage of Marcus Agrippa and Augustus. The theater, started in 15-16 B.C., was constructed using the slope of a natural hillside, thus saving on the cost of stonework.
