Pompeii, Italy

Agrippa’s Map© opens in the ancient Roman resort town of Pompeii, as Jake Stewart treks the stone streets of the city on his way to meet with his close friend, Daniel Weston. Visitors today can explore the homes and businesses that bustled with people almost two thousand years ago. I have been to Pompeii as a tourist several times, but in 2018 I was a volunteer for an archaeological project there. Some of my most memorable moments in the city took place early in the morning before the park opened and my colleagues roused themselves for a day in the hot July sun. Just me and my camera were free to explore the ruins. Sure, the occasional maintenance worker put in an appearance, as well as a few dogs, cats, and lizards, but you can almost hear the echo of people going about their busy lives before Vesuvius blew its top in A.D. 79. When the idea for the book began to take shape, I knew this haunting place would be featured in the storyline. The photograph on the homepage of this website is a view of the main entrance to the city. I hope you enjoy my photos as much as I do and someday visit the site.
